I joined TELOS in June 2014 after I had won a trial membership from a silent auction at work. The main motivation for bidding was my recent engagement and had about 10 months to get in shape. Seems like plenty of time, but as I soon began the planning process, my schedule became extremely hectic. I had been in decent shape most of my life. It was only a few years ago that I overcame my aversion to gyms, thanks to my husband, Rob. Being the sporty outdoorsman he is, he pushed me to get more involved in outdoor activities such as running, hiking, biking and paddle boarding. While I enjoyed these activities, I always felt discouraged because I felt I was too slow and would tire easy compared to others. This frustration, and the fact that I now had a wedding to plan for, really pushed me to get back in the gym and give weight training a go.
My goals: to tone up all over, especially for my backless wedding gown…but not be bulky… and increase strength and stamina. Thanks to my trainer Paige Cervantes, I have met all of those goals and then some!! Paige took my goals/concerns very seriously and is constantly re-vamping my workout regime to keep it challenging. While initially I was also hoping to lose a little weight, Paige helped me realize that it wasn’t so much about losing weight as it was building muscle and redistributing some of the weight. It took a little while for this to sink in, but after we started tracking my measurements and noticed I was losing inches, I became a believer!
A year later I am happily married and in the best shape I’ve been in a long time! I have muscle tone in my arms and legs and am lifting weights; I could only joke about lifting a year ago. Rob has noticed that I’m keeping pace on our weekend jogs and that I have more energy overall. Paige is a wonderful motivator and I couldn’t have done it without her! She’s now helping me with my next goal (courtesy of Rob and I liking to set challenges for each other) of being able to do 3 un-assisted pull ups by the end of summer!
